I have been working with youth since I graduated High School in 2009. I went to Lake Erie College and got a degree in Therapeutic Horsemanship and have been working with children with disabilities ever since. Ten years ago we started the alpaca 4-H program at our local fair and have been working with youth ever since. We attend ALSA, ILR, and AOA shows. We have attended the National Alpaca Show three times and won Championships each time. I often also sell trained performance animals for youth.
I try to make sure no kid is excluded from showing because of financials. I provide the animals, the equipment, and the cost to show. If we got to a big show such as the National Alpaca Show where hotel stays and large travel costs could be accrued we often work together to do a fundraiser, find sponsors, or pitch in where possible. One person may help with gas, another family packs the snacks, etc. We work as a team to try and give the youth as many experiences as we can. I do require a certain number of practices with an animal before attending the higher level shows. I will not pay for your child to go to an upper-level show if they are not bonded and ready with their animal.
