Maureen and her husband, Larry, started their alpaca ranch more than a decade ago, but Maureen’s love affair with camelids began in fourth grade, with a report on the Incas and their bright woven clothing. It took a few years, but they now have a ranch with over 70 alpacas, both Suri and Huacaya.

They have had such an increase in interest in alpacas and their fiber that they are both full time on the ranch. Their ranch store carries alpaca yarn, fleece, rovings, and batts along with gifts and clothing. The hand carders handed down from Maureen’s great-grandmother may be retired, but they have been replaced by other fiber processing equipment. Maureen enjoys spinning and teaching others to spin as well. Summer finds her conducting dye classes and showing others how to skirt fleeces for shows, mills, and hand spinners.

Maureen is a 4H Camelid leader, and helps to train alpacas for the Performance ring. She has been an ALSA (Alpaca Llama Show Association) judge for several years and has the honor of judging finished product entries at the California State Fair.

Their ranch hosts both a Performance show and a Kids Clinic at their ranch. Their participation in the AOA National Farm Days event every year showcases spinning and fiber arts to over 500 people a day. Their alpacas go to schools for Ag and Career Day events. They host several school tours each year, usually with a fiber art “make and take” project. Families and groups are frequent visitors to the ranch where they learn about alpacas and their fiber.

Maureen has been a Spin Off judge in the past and is excited to have completed the AOA Spin Off accreditation process!
