Karen has been involved with alpacas since 2010, though she fell in love with them and their fleece about 9 years before. Today she has a herd that fluctuates between about 24 and 30, with the goal of breeding for retained fineness and staple.

She has participated in the AOA Show System from the beginning of her alpaca adventure.

All of the fleece from the herd is used to produce a multitude of products ranging from yarn for knitting, roving, batts, and rug yarn. Karen has a brick and mortar store, Blazing Star Ranch, where she sells her alpaca products and teaches spinning, weaving, knitting, and crochet. She is a member of the Mountain and Plains Fibershed, a group committed to promote the use of locally sourced fibers and goods and to educate people about their availability. She is now an accredited Spin-Off Judge.
